Where it hit

The core crossed the metro west to east while most people were asleep. The first golf-ball reports came out of Piper and Maywood in western Wyandotte County just after 1 a.m., reached Kansas City, Kansas by about 1:40, crossed the river into North Kansas City and Sugar Creek between 1:49 and 1:59, and was over Independence by roughly 2 a.m. Several reports describe windshield and vehicle damage, which is a reliable sign the same stones were hitting roofs.

Of the 33 hail reports NOAA logged across the metro, 18 were 1.5 inches or larger — the range that reliably bruises asphalt shingles rather than just marking them. Counties with reports: Wyandotte County, KS, Jackson County, MO, Clay County, MO, Leavenworth County, KS.

Does that mean your roof is damaged?

Not automatically, and this is worth being careful about. A NOAA report confirms hail of a given size fell somewhere near a named place at a named time. It does not establish that stones of that size hit your roof, or that they caused functional damage if they did. Hail cores are narrow and unevenly distributed — one street can be stripped while the next is untouched.

What the report does give you is a documented date of loss, which is the single most useful fact in a claim file. If you find damage, you can name the storm rather than guessing, and the filing clock starts from a date you can prove.

2. Get an inspection before you file, not after — a roofer's written findings are what make a claim concrete, and the order matters more than most people realise.
3. Check your deductible before deciding. Wind and hail deductibles are frequently a percentage of the dwelling limit rather than a flat figure, and a claim valued below it closes with no payment.
4. Be wary of anyone who knocks first. Storm-chasing crews follow NOAA reports into a metro within days. Some are fine; the ones offering to cover your deductible are proposing something illegal in a growing list of states.
